Sedation Options

Treating you comfortably and safely is one of our primary objectives. We understand that many patients are apprehensive regarding dental procedures and offer several modes of sedation to diminish or eliminate sensation, pain and anxiety. These options include short and long acting local anesthetic, nitrous oxide (also known as laughing gas), oral sedation, and conscious sedation (IV sedation). The properly applied combination of these techniques permit patients to comfortably relax, while receiving periodontal and implant therapy in our state-of-the-art facility. Every effort is taken to assure that our patients remain comfortable, calm, informed and well monitored. Many patients enjoy the benefits of being sedated while treatment is performed.

Oral Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is an excellent choice for those who are anxious and want to relax in the dental chair. Oral medication is provided prior to treatment in order to induce a mild state of sedation. Though oral sedatives do not cause sleep, they usually dull the senses. This means that most patients cannot remember the pain, smells or noises associated with the procedure.

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation, also known as “conscious” or “twilight” sedation, is a form of sedation which maintains the patient in a drug-induced state throughout the surgical procedure. While under twilight, you remain responsive and capable of maintaining your own airway, yet relaxed and free of fear, anxiety and apprehension. Medications for this procedure are administered directly into the bloodstream, which means the effects are almost immediate. While sedated, any lengthy procedure will feel like a merely few minutes, and you will have very little recollection of the procedure itself. IV sedation is available to make your periodontal care relaxed, and your road to periodontal health full of smiles.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous gas, or “laughing gas,” is used as a mild sedative. It is delivered through a nose hood, and is administered during the entire procedure. Nitrous oxide elevates the general mood and can evoke a general sense of well-being. Most importantly, it relieves anxiety and reduces pain during the procedure. There are few side effects associated with nitrous oxide, and it has been safely used in dentistry for many years.
